Exploring the Graph of Quadratic Function

As a final project of  Design of Science Education and Communication course, all students, including my partner Sylvana and I have to design a learning activity. There 3  documents that we design;

  1. Underpinning Design
  2. Students’ Worksheet and Exercise
  3. Teaching Guide and Rubric

Underpinning Design

In this document we will describe our design about the “Exploring the Graph of a Quadratic Function”, for which the target group is students grade X in St Albertus Senior High School (14 to 15 years old), in Indonesia. This design is mainly intended to help students in drawing the graph of a quadratic function and let the students experience drawing the graph of a quadratic function to be more meaningful. The more detailed information about target group will be described in the target group part. In this design, we set students to work with a software namely Graphmatica 2.0. This software is used to draw any function.

In this design, we provide a teaching guide, a student worksheet, and an individual exercise in the end of learning activities. We set students to do the worksheet in pairs for about 35 minutes, and then followed by discussion session in which they will make general agreement about the characteristics of the quadratic function graphs. In this session, the teacher also leads the students to understand about symmetry axis. In the end of the lesson they will do exercise individually as the evaluation of the whole activities that they just done. The clear description about the technical learning activities setting and the goal of each activity is provided in Hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) and teaching guide. Teacher Guide and Rubric

As previously mentioned, this design is mainly intended to a specific target group, however I think it is applicable for students of senior high school who want to learn about graphing quadratic function. Here I attach some files needed for the learning activity.

In this lesson, students are guided to explore the graph of a quadratic function. This sequence of activities is mainly intended to help students in drawing the graph of a quadratic function and let the students experience drawing the graph of a quadratic function to be more meaningful. This design give students room to construct their informal strategy in graphing quadratic function such as use the symmetry axis, predicting the vertex and the open-direction of the parabola before they directly learn the formula such as formula of finding vertex, symmetry axis, and the minimum and maximum value. Students’ Worksheet and Exercise

In this learning activity, we set students to work with a software namely Graphmatica 2.0. This software is used to draw any function. The clear description about the technical learning activities setting and the goal of each activity is provided in Teaching-Learning activity part. To download students’ worksheet and Exercise file, you may click Students Worksheet and Individual Exercise

Graphmatica 2.0

The idea we use this software because it is easy to use. We just need to input the function, such as y=x^2+3 in the column as the following picture. To download the software you may click here

I hope it will help senior high school teacher who are interested to try another approach in learning quadratic function.
